About this Event

Want to take your website building skills to the next level? WordPress powers 30% of websites on the internet and is a great way to get a website with a content management system up fast! We’ll use PHP to create a WordPress website, learn how to customize the layout using PHP and CSS, and create a widget in PHP. PHP is also a commonly used tool to build websites and many businesses use PHP in their stack including Facebook, Slack, Etsy, Wickipedia, and Mailchimp. We’ll be creating custom fan pages, and learning the basics of PHP, so that you’ll be able to do the heavy-lifting on WordPress-powered websites!

In this 1 day workshop you will learn how to:

  • Build Fan Site in WordPress, featuring a blog, photo gallery, and calendar.
  • Effectively use elegant and secure language features introduced in PHP 7
  • Practice setting up a WordPress instance, customizing the layout, installing and modifying plugins

A few prerequisites:

This workshop is best suited for students who have basic programming knowledge. Understands SQL (or Relational Databases in general), working knowledge of HTML and CSS, experience using the browser’s Dev Tools. Windows 10, macOS 10.13+, or Linux are welcome.

About the Instructor:

Julie Gauthier is a full-time software developer and instructor. She has a Bachelors and Masters Degree in Computer Science and is an adjunct lecturer at Pace University teaching web development. She loves contributing to the tech community by building, leading, sharing, and getting involved with start-ups. (Ask her about the consumer friendly smart mirror she designed!) She believes being able to program is a super power and she in an enthusiastic life long learner. When not behind a keyboard, she is playing with her dog on the lake where she lives in Connecticut.
