Intro to Data Science (aka “Big Data”) & Careers in the Space | Byte Academy

For the third year in a row Data Scientist has been ranked the #1 career by Glassdoor, and the US Bureau of Labor Statistics expects data science needs to create 11.5 million job openings by 2026. Please join Byte Academy instructor Gregory Smith for this workshop which provides an overview of data science followed by a discussion of career opportunities in the space.

After defining data science and talking about buzzwords relevant to the space, such as machine learning and artificial intelligence, foundational topics touched upon include:

– Data manipulation

– Data at scale – working with “Big Data”

– Data analysis, data visualization

This will be followed by a discussion of careers in the field and skills that employers seek in their data science related roles. In addition to Data Science, this includes Data Engineer, Data Analyst, Data Architect and more.

PRE-REQUISITES: None, for beginners

About Greg Smith, Instructor (Python): Greg has been teaching at Byte Academy for the past year. In addition to assisting Byte’s full-time students, he has produced and led specialty skills workshops including “Introduction to Python fr Excel and Data Analysis” and “How to Build a Chatbot in Python”. He also produced a webinar, “Intro to Python for Data Analysis” for Interactive Brokers, a publicly traded, global company. Prior to this, Greg worked as a Manager for the New Jersey Fencing Alliance (NJFA). He earned his Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science from Allegheny College and minored in both Biology and Economics, and then turned to technology and Python initially as an analytical tool. He now does Python, JavaScript, and iOS development work in addition to teaching Python.
